Chinook Pass is about to bloom

I just returned from a trip up into the Cascades, east of Mt Rainier, and the meadows at Lake Tipsoo are about to erupt in wildflowers! I would guess that the best time to visit will be from 7-20 days from today for the full display of color and natural wonder. I wanderered a bit around the lakes right to the west of the pass and there are thousands of buds waiting for another week of great sunshine. Then they will put on one of the best shows around…

Some early flowers are popping already! Avalanche lilly and paintbrush…
This same viewpoint will be full of color in a week or two.

My Golden Retriever wanted so badly to go on the trails, but I had to remind her that in the national park, there is a strict no pet policy except on paved trails and roads. She took a moment to reflect on the amazing wildlife that inhabits our parks and decided that we’d stay in the picnic area, and then with other family while I checked out the trails around the lakes. In the national forest, just on the other side of the pass, she is certainly welcome on the trails with a leash. I keep her close by just in case we run into some territorial large mammals with much more attitude than my sweet dog!

Lastly, a hike through the woods was required to make up for the missed opportunity… We found a route with special features that make any dog happy: cool meadows beneath a mixed forest, and icy river water to have a drink. I love the random rock formations that can just be hanging out in the middle of things.

The sound of water flowing over rock is just so relaxing and beautiful. There is a place not too far from here full of good memories: our old dog loved to collect dozens of sticks from the river and pile them up on the bank in one spot. The sticks remain after he passed a few years ago and remind me of the good times.

I am so blessed to live in this beautiful place. I hope this post, dropped just after we returned home, will inspire you to find a few days, maybe even next weekend, to retreat away from sitting and stress into a natural spot where you can be refreshed and be outdoors. We have plenty of summer weekends ahead!

Feel free to share your own experiences this last week. I’d love to hear about your adventures!
