Lena Lake

Friends at work and I were chatting a bit and discovered that hiking is an interest and we all had June 19th off. The obvious next step was to organize a hike. We decided on a day hike and a entry level journey that would not overwhelm anyone. One such hike that I had never done but always wanted to do was Lena Lake. This little gem is on the Eastern side of the Olympic Mountains just up from the Hood Canal. The drive is amazing with views that go back and forth from mountains to deep blue water. Six miles up the Hamma Hamma Road, the trail head to Lena Lake awaits, but get there early. I knew that it was popular so we arrived at 8:00, with 10 cars already parked. By the time we descended, the lot was full and cars were parked along the road. A pass is required for parking. Dogs can accompany you on this hike as it does not head up into wilderness or the national park.

The forest is beautiful, with new life everywhere this time of year. Hemlock, Cedar, fir and blooming rhododendrons can by experienced, with copious ferns, streams, a river, and looming ridges on either side of the valley. The hike goes up 1300 feet with lots of switchbacks on a very well maintained trail, perfect for new hikers.

The lake is a beautiful work of art nestled between some tree lined peaks. The sound of the swift stream flowing into the north end of the lake can be heard in the distance.

Feeling good
Great lunch spot

I hiked in with my backpack as a warm up for my upcoming backpacking trip. It felt good! I love a great little day hike that is perfect for friends new to hiking and a great workout. Ten days to go until my 4 night adventure….
