Best state park in Washington…

Looking east at the lighthouse at Fort Worden State Park in Washington.

The state park system has so many gems in Washington State. I am going to be bold and state what I have come to accept: Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend is simply the best. Here is why:

  • Pristine and beautiful beaches
  • A historic lighthouse
  • Historic military bunkers, which you can walk through and which are literally kid heaven.
  • Two great campgrounds: one on the beach and one in the woods.
  • Biking trails and hiking trails
  • Overnight lodging is available in old military housing, and out at the lighthouse
  • Tennis courts/pickle ball/running trails/huge grass area for play
  • Conference center facilities available
  • A museum, and marine center
  • An excellent outdoor and indoor restaurant that is so quaint
  • A dock for boaters
  • Views of the Straight of Juan de Fuca on one side of the point and a beautiful bay with the Cascade Mountains in the background on the other.
  • Yearly events: Jazz festival, art shows, and more.

It’s not that other parks do not have awesome features and beauty. Fort Worden just has it all. RV’s, conferences, boaters, and tent camping can all coexist, and everyone can have a great time!

This last peaceful view always get me…

The water, the beach, the lighthouse and the mountain rising up in the background are the perfect view composition for me: it means peace, restoration, and rest. A walk down this beach is the perfect ending to a wonderful day.

It’s also the perfect place to bring your dog: our golden retriever loved the copious walks, the beach play, and even laying in the grass while we sat by the fire. A leash is required and make sure to have water available! The wind can dry you out as well as the salt water. We camped at the beach on a Sunday night, which is about the last campsite available for months. Make sure you plan your trip in advance and reserve your stay. Check out the website below: the first for great information, and the second to reserve your camping stay!
