Walking the dog…

My golden retriever getting some exercise

Late fall brings early sunsets. Adding the loss of daylight savings time, and suddenly, at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, darkness begins to descend. So this Friday, as soon as my workday ended, I headed out the door with the dog and leash, and went straight to the park. I used an extendable leash that gives more freedom, and also keeps me from having my shoulder pulled off every time there was something fun to smell. The temperature was dropping quickly, but with a decent pace and a nice coat I was warm enough. Our veterinarian says that this is a must for our dog at her age. The question is whether I take the dog for the walk or does the dog take me?

Regardless, it’s good for both of us. 30 minutes of walking around in a park, gives the dog plenty of stimulation, a good amount of steps, and variety. For me, it’s good to blow off some steam after work, and get out into the trees after a long day with the computer.

We made it back just after dusk, and in time for dinner. Along the way, there was some beautiful color in the sky and a slice of moon hovering over the bay.

The dog was so happy and so was I. Dinner tastes so much better after some activity. Try an evening walk and make it a habit! Your dog will love you for it!
